It is a story that has been told, retold and transformed in countless travelogues and novels, some works of the avantgarde, and in popular cinema between the 1880s and the 1920s. A story of brief encounters, random experiences, adventure and ambiguous desire, rather than a 'grand recit', it left, however, its traces on the ground of fantasy itself, reshaping it from a setting for desire into a powerful tool of appropriation. German text. German description: Die Eroberung der Phantasie rekonstruiert eine Geschichte. Es konnte die Geschichte eines Abenteuers sein. Ihre Protagonisten heissen Carl Peters, Lothar von Trotha oder Frieda von Bulow, und das Abenteuer, von dem sie traumen, wird unzahlige Menschenleben zerstoren. Es ist die Geschichte vom Aufstieg und Niedergang des deutschen Kolonialreichs, die in unzahligen Varianten erzahlt, wiedererzahlt und transformiert worden ist, in Lebensberichten und Romanen, im popularen Kino, in einigen Werken avantgardistischer Kunst. Hier werden die realen Eroberungen vorweggenommen oder noch einmal nachgespielt, es werden Wunsche nach individueller oder kollektiver Entfaltung und Dominanz verschiedenster Art entworfen. Es wird aber zugleich die Phantasie selbst in ihrer Fahigkeit formiert, Szenarien zu entwerfen, mit Figuren zu besetzen und diese Besetzungen standig zu revidieren. Die Eroberung der Phantasie fragt nach dem Wissen (popular-)kultureller Genres und dessen Interferenzen mit geopolitischem Wissen und Handeln. Erkennbar werden dabei die Prozesse, in denen die Phantasie der Eroberung ihre Ziele absteckt und dabei selbst zum Ziel einer Eroberung wird. |
