Warning To All Book Publications: eBook Conversion Is No Worries...
Print publishers pack the halls of eBook conversion conventions anxious to learn the joys of this new art. Truth is, electronic book conversion is a simple choice. What isn't is how to actually earn cash from eBooks.
I've seen this phenomenon before, most particularly with bands and authors. The previous posts their music on iTunes. "Hey, its real now," they are saying with a feeling of achievement. Then nothing happens.
Self-published writers do the same, posting their books to Amazon. Its real, its for sale, yet nothing happens. Why, you ask? Because making something ready for sale does not compare to real sales. It is what I call the... "If you build it they'll come false impression. Sorry, people. The "Field of Dreams," while a great, feel good flick, has no foundation in reality.
You are now able to see why the book publishing industry's current fixation with e-book conversion is a deja vu moment for me. Whats peculiar is they know better. They know that book sales are a simple result of well-crafted advertisement. But the fascination of the new paradigm of eBook publishing leads most to (reach|come to|make} hyperbolic inferences, the electronic book world is somehow a different beast.
Once the conversion fixation is seen for what it is, a relative no-brainer, the cloak of delusion is lifted, revealing that eBooks need the same promotional ability as do standard books.
The bottom line. Nothing moves if there ain't no promotion. So do not sweat the little minutia like eBook conversion. It only hides the real issue, that traditional publishers, principally stuck in the brick-and-mortar world, {lack the promotional skills crucial to moving product in the 21st century. Specifically, web based marketing skills.
Standard book companies have been mum in light of two recent and definite circumstances.
Self-published eBook writers like John Locke and Amanda Hocking, both of which have sold over one million copies of their eBooks on Amazon, have proved to the dismay of conventional publishers that they just do not need a book publication deal. And who might argue with that? The money speaks for itself.
The price point of eBooks, anywhere from free to around 3 bucks, has absolutely disrupted conventional pricing matrices, leaving no space for normal book publications who are burdened with costs and overhead for which smart go it alone are not.
But the situation for book publishers isnt as dreadful as it looks. After understanding the pricing of the E-Book market has been interrupted by self-publishers, a sweet spot is exposed at a higher tier, specifically Multimedia eBook publishing.
Here's why.
MultiMedia eBooks enjoy higher pricing parameters, permitting book publishers a workable entry point to re-establish their credibility and worth.
Few self-published authors possess the resources, monetary or otherwise, to provide top of the range Multimedia eBooks.
Sounds great, but how?
I guess some book publishers will choose to go it alone by boning up on the abilities and resources crucial to making MultiMedia eBooks. To people who do, best of luck.
But a much less costly and dangerous offer will be to form alliances with firms that already possess the necessary experience. Likely suspects are music publishers, video archivists, and firms that concentrate on Multi-Media eBooks production and promotional services.
For first to market points to consider, book publishers would be best served by building on their existing back catalog rather than creating net new Multimedia eBooks from nothing. Not only will this strategy afford speed to market, and it adapts well to leveraging existing Multimedia assets, effectively respiring new life into them without incurring further costs of making new ones.
Then again, I imagine book publishers can continue to sit on the sidelines with the hope that one day the e-book market will stabilise at a far higher price point . But I wouldnt bet on it. Whats more, a sector that takes a do nothing and see approach is unarguably, not in the market. Such is the case of the book publishing industry today. But it just cant last. The clock is ticking.
